I am considering starting a CocoaHeads chapter in the Twin Cities. What is CocoaHeads you ask? I’ll use the home office’s definition:
CocoaHeads is a group devoted to discussion of Apple Computer’s Cocoa Framework for programming on MacOS X. During monthly meetings, members present on their projects and offer tutorials on various programming topics.
I think this might be a fun way to meet and learn from others who have an interest Mac development. Presentation topics could be anything from How do I get started? to Creating Dynamic UIs with Core Animation to Demo: My iPhone App That Will Rule The World. I don’t think anything would be off limits as long as it pertains to Cocoa.
As step one I’ve set up a simple online poll to gauge potential interest. I’ll let this go for a couple of weeks, so please vote if you’re interested and let’s see what happens.

Even if the interest isn’t that great, plan a meeting or two anyway! At the very least there you’ll have one other person there..

Hey Damon. I’m glad to see you and a few others are interested. Based on the responses I’ve got so far I’m not sure if there’s enough local interest try to set up a formal CocoaHeads chapter. Going through the effort of finding an appropriate meeting room, soliciting speakers, etc may be a bit much if 2 people show up.
If nothing else, maybe I’ll try to set up an informal tech meet up with those interested and talk about Cocoa over beers.

I was just thinking of starting one, so I’m obviously interested.

Chrisopher, what’s your take on the level of interest in the Twin Cities? There are only a few companies doing Mac and Cocoa development in the TCs (of which I’m aware anyway) which may pose a challenge to finding experienced, expert-level speakers. Hopefully, this can be made up for by some knowledgeable amateurs. If you’ve a presentation idea in mind, just let me know!

Honestly, as much as I love Macs and software, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about learning Cocoa for developing desktop apps, because I don’t think there’s much demand for new non-enterprise desktop apps (I use iTunes and Safari 90% of the time). But I think the iPhone changes the game, and I’m excited to develop for that platform.
I don’t have any connections in the Mac development community, but why not start one and see how well we do?
I’ve just started learning Cocoa/XCode myself, so I don’t have expertise to contribute, but I can think of a couple topics I’d be interested in researching for a presentation. But I wouldn’t be willing to demo my iPhone app that will rule the world. That’s top secret.
